Pyrenees Hike
Pamplona to Barcelona
Stretching
for 400km from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, the
Pyrenees have for many centuries formed a natural frontier,
physical, climatic and linguistic, between France and
Spain. Second only
to the Alps among the great mountain ranges of Western
Europe, the Pyrenees are much less frequented, and offer
an exciting combination of Roman Roads, lush pastureland,
snowcapped peaks, forested valleys, and traditional
villages.
Day
1: Pamplona
We
meet in Pamplona, the old capital of the kingdom of
the Basques, center of their culture and traditions.
We enjoy a warm up guided walk through the old part
of town, with its cobblestone streets where the world
thrilling ‘running of the bulls’ takes place. From there
we will drive to the Echo Valley.
Day
2 : The Roman Road To Puerto Del Palo
Our
first hike takes us along a historical Roman road which
links Spain and France across the Pyrenees through magnificent
landscapes of snow capped peaks. The road, used since
medieval times, offers a route that combines the beauty
of the landscape with outstanding mountain panoramas
of Castle of Acher, Forca Peak and the Acherito summits
all around.
Day
3: The High Pass Of Foraton.
Today
takes us along a classical hike of the western Pyrenees.
Near Bisaurin peak we begin a switchback ascent through
the forest with a rocky stretch by a waterfall. We will
arrive to a vast and wide area with bucolic pasturelands.
Crossing the high pass of Lo Foraton, our highest altitude
today (6660ft) where we can almost ‘touch’ the Bisaurin
peak (8.759 ft), begins a descent that will take us
to the Aragüés Valley.
Day
4 : The Glacier Valley Of The Lost Mountain (Monte
Perdido).
Located
on the Ordesa National Park, this walk takes us through
the spectacular glacier canyon of river Arazas, in a
gradual uphill towards the base of Monte Perdido, one
of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees (11000ft.). The
landscape contrasts the extreme aridity of the karstic
deserts and the permanent presence of waterfalls traversing
valleys full of exuberant vegetation, with the last
glaciers seemingly perched upon our heads.
Day
5 : The Forest Of Broto
Our
journey today begins along the banks of the Cinca River,
crossing some small and traditional villages we find
San Vicente de Labuerda, where we will be delighted
by the impressive XI century Romanic temple. The
hike will take us up to the medieval village of Ainsa,
with its old quarter that still preserves the ancient
walls of the town, its majestic arcaded
plaza and the slender tower
of La Colegiata.
Day
6 : The Valley Of The Romanesque Art and Granite Lakes.
One of the highlights of the tour
is the jewel of the Catalan Pyrenees. Except for Ordesa
to the west, there is not a more pristine and breathtaking
area in the entire Pyrenean region. Indeed, it has some
of the finest mountain scenery of the Pyrenees, a magnificent
conjunction of meadows, peaks, lakes, streams and forests.
The hike begins following the Black stream uphill towards
the Black lake. From there we will walk through a path
among the nails of Travessani, a charming and pleasing
landscape of hanging rocks and boulders. The lunch will
be served in a mountain refuge. On the way back, we
will circle the dam of Cavallers.
Day
7 : From Saint Nicolau Valley To The Lake Of Saint
Maurici
Our
longitudinal route through the San Nicolau Valley today
ends at Estany of Saint Maurici. This is the old path
of the bathers from Caldes de Boi, where a Roman spa
is found. The route along the valley of San Nicolau
has a unique beauty especially on the prairies of Aigüestortes.
Day
8 : The Eagle’s Meadow.
The hike begins in Prat
d’Aguilo, on the sanctuary of Bastanist. From there
we will cross the fields and oak forests of Estana underneath
the impressive walls of the sierra del Cadi, with its
spectacular summit. This is a classical steep hike through
the Pyrenees, with magnificent sceneries. We return
to La Seu d’Urgell for overnight.
Day
9 :The Woods And Sanctuary Of Boscal.
Our
final hike takes us along a charming route through oak
groves and pine forests. We begin in the pastoral village
of Cava and end at the lost chapel of El Boscal. After
lunch we drive to Barcelona, and spend the afternoon
exploring the gothic quarter, Gaudi’s urban architecture
and the famous Ramblas. Overnight Barcelona.
Day
10: Departure or extend
you stay in Barcelona .
After
breakfast we offer a group transfer to the airport or
extend you stay for additional time in Barcelona.!
